Leo Carrillo State Beach sits at the rugged western end of Malibu, known less for wide sand than for its sea caves, tide pools, and reef-fringed coves tucked beneath coastal bluffs. A favorite for exploring at low tide and for surfers working its rocky points, it has a wilder feel than the LA beaches to the south. The water is cool year-round. The Pacific here is cold and currents can be strong, so check the safety flag and rip-current risk above, be ready for cold water, and swim near a lifeguard.
