About Hatteras Beach
Hatteras Village anchors the southern tip of Hatteras Island, a working fishing village and the departure point for the free ferry to remote Ocracoke Island. Known for its sport-fishing fleet, the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum, and quiet wide beaches, it's a laid-back, maritime end of the Outer Banks. Gulf Stream influence keeps the water warmer than the latitude suggests: warm in summer (upper 70s to low 80s°F), cool in spring and fall, and cold in winter. The open Atlantic here produces strong rip currents — among the most dangerous on the East Coast — so check the safety flag and rip-current risk above, follow posted flags, and swim near a lifeguard.
