About Amelia Island Beach

Amelia Island is the northernmost barrier island on Florida's Atlantic coast, in Nassau County just south of the Georgia line. Anchored by the historic Victorian town of Fernandina Beach, it's known for 13 miles of wide, hard-packed Atlantic sand — flat enough in places for horseback riding — a quieter, more natural alternative to Florida's busier resort beaches. Being this far north, its water is the coolest on the Florida Atlantic: warm and swimmable from late spring through fall, and chilly in winter. Rip currents are Florida’s deadliest beach hazard, so check the safety flag and rip-current risk above, follow posted flags, and swim near a lifeguard.

Amelia Island Beach FAQ

When is the best time to visit Amelia Island?

Late spring through early fall brings the warmest water and calmest beach days. Spring and fall are pleasant and quieter; winter is mild but the ocean turns cool for swimming.

How warm is the water at Amelia Island?

As Florida’s northernmost Atlantic beach, water ranges from the low 80s°F in summer down to the low 60s°F in winter. See the live water temperature above.

Is Amelia Island good for a quiet beach day?

Yes — its wide, natural beaches and historic Fernandina town make it one of the calmer stretches of the Florida coast. It faces the open Atlantic, so follow the safety flag above and swim near a lifeguard.
